The
first time I've read Steve Krugs' "Don't
Make Me Think!" was on a plane from San Francisco to Lisbon, stopping
in New York, on September 9th, 2001. Yes, two days before you know what. I
was on my way back from the web2001 Conference, where I had bought it. I finished
the book before I got to Lisbon and it was great reading. As the author himself
states, common sense "is not necessarily obvious until after
someone's pointed it out to you". This book extremely well written, is
engaging from page 1 (correction, from the cover) and contains innumerous
crucial teachings on web usability. This comes about because I am reading
it again. I'm sure I missed important stuff when I first read it. I strongly
recommend it.

A primeira vez que li o livro de Steve Krug "Don't Make Me Think!" foi num avião de São Francisco para Lisboa, com paragem em Nova Iorque, no dia 9 de Setembro de 2001. Sim, dois dias antes. Estava de volta da conferência web2001, onde o tinha comprado. Acabei o livro antes de chegar a Lisboa e foi uma leitura óptima. Como o próprio autor escreve o senso comum "não é necessariamente óbvio até que alguém o indique". Este livro está extremamente bem escrito, cativa o leitor desde a primeira página (não, desde a capa) e contém inúmeros ensinamentos cruciais sobre usabilidade (não encontro melhor tradução) na web. Isto vem a propósito, dado que estou a lê-lo de novo. Decerto que me escaparam informações importantes aquando da primeira leitura. Recomendo-o vivamente.

I've found a temporary solution for the referrers column, thanks to a tip from Steve Champeon. I am using the CSS "overflow" property to prevent having links that are too long for the box deform. With overflow:hidden any content that's longer than the 130px width of the box will be truncated. This of course isn't the best solution but a) prevents the box from deforming; b) gives me time to find a better scripting solution.

dos referrers, graças a uma dica do Steve
Champeon. Passei a usar a propriedade
"overflow" do CSS para impedir que os links longos demais causem
a deformação da coluna. Usando overflow:hidden qualquer
conteúdo maior que os 130px de largura da caixa será truncado.
Claro que esta não é a melhor solução mas a) impede
que a caixa deforme; b) dá-me tempo para encontrar uma solução
melhor para um script.

css / title problem
Yes, we seem to have a situation with the referrers column on the left hand side of thehomepage. I have registered with Bloghop, in my quest to explore the blog world further. It seems though that, because the referring page doesn't have a "title", what ends up in the column is the URL itself with the unfortunate effect you can see. It overrides the width: 130px in the CSS. I've emailed bloghop, in hope they generate a title for the page. Otherwise I will simply have to unregister and hope the link goes away.

Sim, parece que temos um problema com a coluna de referrers do lado esquerdo da homepage. Registei o site no Bloghop, na continuação das minhas incursões sobre o mundo dos blogs. Parece que, no entanto, devido à página que faz link do site deles para a minha não ter "titulo", o que acontece é que o que aparece na coluna é o URL com o infeliz efeito que podem ver. E o width: 130px no CSS não é respeitado. Enviei um email para o bloghop, na esperança que seja possível ter um titulo para a página. Senão terei de simplesmente retirar o registo e esperar que o link desapareça.

Bobby, meet Cynthia
There is a new validation tool in town. Cynthia Says™ is "a web content accessibility validation solution, it is designed to identify errors in design related to Section 508 standards and the WCAG guidelines". I haven't tested it properly, but it seems like a good alternative (or companion) to Bobby. There's no such thing as too much testing. One downside I've encountered is the 60 second time gap between submissions. But that she has in common with Bobby. Other links

Existe uma nova ferramenta de validação. Cynthia Says™ é "uma solução de validação de conteúdo na web, concebida para identificar erros relacionados com a os standards da Secção 508 (regras dos EUA) e as directrizes WCAG". Ainda não o testei convenientemente, mas parece-me uma boa alternativa (ou companhia) para o Bobby. Nunca é demais mais um teste. O único senão é o intervalo de 60 segundos obrigatório entre cada pesquisa, mas isso ela tem em comum com o Bobby. Outros links

Terry Jones (former Monty Python member) has published a letter in the London Observer, called "I'm losing patience with my neighbours, Mr Bush". It's a very funny piece of writting, but it also makes you think about the current World situation and how Mr. Bush (and his followers, including Prime Minister Barroso) should think carefully about the way they're facing this whole Iraq situation.

Every year takes place the Lisbon half-marathon. It was yesterday and I took part in the mini-marathon, as has become a habit since five years ago. The participants have the chance to cross the "Ponte 25 de Abril" on foot, and what a sight! Talking about feet, don't even ask me about mine! After 8 Km you'd complain too... 57 minutes, in case you're wondering.

Hours. It's a fantastic movie. These three ladies (Nicole Kidman, Julianne
Moore, Meryl Streep) are fabulous in their roles and should be recognised
for it. Ed Harris also. When the movie ended I wished the hours would last...
[PT] Todos os anos realiza-se a meia-maratona de Lisboa. Foi ontem e participei na mini-maratona, como já é hábito há cinco anos. Os participantes têm a hipótese de atravessar a Ponte 25 de Abril a pé, e que vista! Por falar em pés, nem me perguntem pelos meus! It seems like my call reached someone. There are now two people in portugal who are genuinely interested in web standards :-) André has a great site, where he writes about these and other issues. It has already been useful to me: It's where I got the new 'Refferers' area I am including on the left hand side bar. It shows the last reffering sites to my own site in the last 24 hours.
[PT] Parece que o meu apelo teve resposta. Afinal já somos dois em Portugal genuinamente interessados em web standards :-) O André tem um site muito bom em que aborda este e outros assuntos. Já me foi útil: foi de lá que retirei a nova área de 'refferers' que passo a incluir na barra do lado esquerdo. Ela mostra os ultimos sites que fizeram link para o meu nas últimas 24 horas.

Web Accessibility. I've written about it, and will surely be writing more in the future. In the meantime, I am studying the W3Cs' Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) Guidelines and Techniques. You should too if you're serious about building accessible sites that adhere to the standards. And you should be because, if not for another reason, it's the law!
[PT] Acessibilidade na Web. Já escrevi sobre o asssunto e voltarei a escrever no futuro. Entretanto, estou a estudar as Directivas e Técnicas da Iniciativa para a Acessibilidade na Web (WAI) do W3C. Se realmente pretendem construir sites acessiveis e que respeitam os standards, aconselho que as leiam também. E, se não se lembrarem de uma razão melhor, aqui fica uma: É a lei, no caso dos sites dos organismos da administração directa e indirecta do Estado. Brevemente mais sobre este assunto, porque as vantagens são inúmeras.

Isn't it funny that, on the eve of a major decision in the United Nations (that could lead to war), the prime minister of a European Union country (yes, Portugal) declares that, whatever that decision may be, his government will support the United States actions? Talk about timing... And, best of all, as he probably thinks this has nothing to do with the Portuguese people, he makes this announcement abroad and in French (how ironic). Talk about contempt...
[PT] Não é curioso que, na véspera de uma decisão fundamental das Nações Unidas (que pode levar à guerra), o Primeiro-Ministro de um país da União Europeia (sim, Portugal) declare que, seja qual for a decisão, o seu governo apoiará as acções dos Estados Unidos? Isto é que é timing... E, ainda melhor, como provavelmente pensa que o assunto nada tem a ver com o povo português, faz este anúncio no estrangeiro e en francês (que irónico). Isto é que é respeito...
