Writing XHTML documents - new article online

XHTML is the right markup language for Web documents. It's not that you can't use HTML but the fact is that it will, sooner or later, be updated to XHTML. Otherwise, many websites will stop functioning in new browser versions, not to mention other Web enabled devices. In the previous article, we've looked at the origin and evolution of XHTML. Now, we will describe the main rules for writing XHTML documents. Besides the need to have a well structured document, we also discuss the importance of validation.

O XHTML é a linguagem de marcação certa para escrever documentos Web. Não é que não se possa usar o HTML, mas o facto é que esta linguagem está descontinuada e, mais cedo ou mais tarde, terá de ser actualizada para XHTML, sob o risco dos sites deixarem de funcionar nos novos browsers e nos dispositivos com acesso à Web. No artigo anterior fizemos uma abordagem inicial ao aparecimento e evolução do XHTML. Neste artigo vamos descrever as principais regras para escrever documentos XHTML correctamente. Aquelas que vamos abordar, são as que julgamos mais relevantes. Falaremos também da necessidade de os documentos, para além de estarem bem estruturados, serem válidos. Blogstakes

"Blogstakes is a unique new kind of sweepstakes with two winners for every prize: a person who entered and the site that referred the winning entry". This is yet another fine idea by Brian Alvey (the host of Meet The Makers). Let's meetup

Web standards meetupWeb standards discussed globally. On the first Thursday of every month, in dozens of cities all over the world, people meet to discuss Web standards. XHTML, CSS, and other W3C technologies are the subject of conversation. Lisbon is on the list. Come and meet on Sept 4, at 8pm. This sounds like a great idea. Maybe we'll finally manage to get the discussion going here in PT. Check out the Web standards meetup site and cast your vote. Let me know If you're coming.

XHTML, CSS e outras tecnologias do W3C são tema de conversa. Lisboa está na lista. Venham ao encontro, dia 4 de Setembro, pelas 20h00. Esta é uma excelente iniciativa, e talvez consigamos finalmente lançar o assunto cá em PT. Vejam o site e votem. Digam-me se vão.

"ch... ch... ch... changes"

I've slowly started making some changes to my website, inspired by Jeffrey Zeldman's initiative to "Redesign in public". So people are watching; so what? Maybe at some point they can give me a hint or two, and that would be appreciated. So far, I've recoded some parts of the log. The dates got a more prominent <h3>, and the title for each entry got a <h5>. There's a <h4> missing in between. I realize that, and Bobby may not like it, but that's not the most important issue right now. All in due time. Now each entry is more visible, where before different dates tended to be too close to one another. Next on the list: permanent links. This is all being hand coded, and that's great to exercise my memory. I haven't converted to Movable Type yet, mainly due to lack of time, a common problem. There's another reason: I really like getting my hands dirty on the code, and seeing things come together. But that's another story.

Comecei aos poucos a fazer algumas mudanças no meu site, inspirado pela iniciativa do Jeffrey Zeldman, "Redesenhar em público". Vai estar gente a ver; e depois? Pode ser até que me venham a dar uma dica ou outra, e isso será bem apreciado. Até agora, refiz parte da marcação do log. As datas passaram para um mais destacado <h3> , e o titulo de cada entrada para um <h5>. Falta um <h4> pelo meio. Sei que o Bobby pode não gostar muito, mas não me parece o mais importante neste momento. Tudo a seu tempo. Agora cada entrada está bastante mais visível, onde antes as diferentes datas tendiam a ficar muito próximo umas das outras e em pouco destaque. A seguir na lista: links permanentes. Tudo isto está a ser codificado à mão, o que é óptimo para a memória. Ainda não converti o site para o Movable Type, principalmente por falta de tempo, um problema que parece comum. Há outra razão: Eu gosto de por as mãos no código e ver as partes tomarem forma. Mas essa é outra história.

Fight on, bro

Have I told you about Paideia, Bruno Monteiro's weblog? He's a comrade in arms, in the fight for web standards. His site is a great resource of information and thoughts, put together by someone who shares many of my points of view on how to develop the Web we want our children to grow in (that didn't sound very appropriate, did it?). He has praised my work on his blog. I am honoured. I take a bow.

Já vos falei do projecto Paideia, o blog do Bruno Monteiro? É um companheiro de armas, na luta pelos standards web. O site dele é um óptimo recurso de informação e ideias, por alguém que partilha muitos dos meus pontos de vista sobre como desenvolver a Web que queremos para os nossos filhos (esta não soou muito apropriada, pois não?). Ele teve a bondade de elogiar o meu trabalho. Aqui fica a minha respeitosa vénia.

Come together

Here's an excellent web log on web standards and other web design issues: Andy Budd::Blogography. Andy works for Message, a UK agency. He's also responsible for SkillSwap. It "involves people volunteering a couple of hours one evening to teach a subject of their choice to a small group of their peers. Basically as a means of bringing free training to the local community." This is a great idea. Any volunteers to launch a similar project here in Portugal? Let's get busy! By the way, the sites mentioned were built using XHTML + CSS.

Luso blogs

PTbLOGGERS is the most complete and up to date directory I know of Portuguese blogs. It's a great effort by Carlos, who put together this resource. Take a look and you will be surprised with the quantity (and quality) of the blogs present.

[PT] Juntar conhecimento

Aqui está um excelente web log sobre standards web e outros assuntos do design web: Andy Budd::Blogography. O Andy trabalha para a Message, no Reino Unido. É também responsável pelo projecto SkillSwap. Algumas pessoas oferecem algumas horas de um fim de tarde para ensinar um assunto que dominem, a um pequeno grupo dos seus pares. Basicamente, é uma forma de levar formação gratuita à comunidade local. Esta é uma excelente ideia. Há voluntários para lançar um projecto semelhante cá em Portugal? Mãos à obra! A propósito, os sites referidos foram construídos com XHTML + CSS.

Meltdown

Hell is on holidays in Portugal. Lisbon will reach 37 degrees today. I haven't had a good night sleep in over a week. I wake up at least twice every night. I toss and turn. I go to another room. I take clothes off. I put clothes on. How long will this last, won't someone tell me?

O Inferno veio de férias para Portugal. Lisboa vai atingir os 37 graus hoje. Não durmo bem há mais de uma semana. Acordo pelo menos duas vezes por noite. Viro-me na cama. Vou para outro quarto. Tiro a roupa. Visto a roupa. Quando tempo vai isto durar, ninguém me diz?

Living in the Dark Ages

The use of Instant Messaging (IM) software inside companies has for long been a pet topic among IT professionals. But never, until today, have I read such a complete display of ignorance, paternalism and full-of-shittism (yes, I just made that one up). All of the wrong arguments in just one article. That's something. And it wasn't written that long ago. I am aware, as anyone with half a brain should be, of the possible security hazards that can derive from misusing IM. But simply blocking it, and alleging reasons other than those, is plain idiotic and reminds me of the good old Spanish Inquisition. Hey Torquemada, what do you say?

And here is an email sent by someone (don't ask) who put it exactly as I would have, to the site featuring this pearl of contempt for users:

"Hello,
As an IT Professional, I'm simply amazed by the article How to Block Dangerous Instant Messengers Using ISA, not by the technical content, which is fairly pacific, but by the personal remarks about instant messaging.
OK, it's from 2001 so I guess mentality can change from then till now. Things have evolved since then, and maybe some mentalities also.
Do you know some companies are already developing they own messaging services? Do you really, really think that 3 instant messages are less productive than a 1 minute phone call? And in costs, what costs more to the company? Would you really need to be calling Singapure branch all the time if you could IM people there?
About personal chat sessions, this has nothing to do with security, it's a company policy, as with personal phone calls. It's sad when security serves only to implement Gestapo pseudo-productivity-enhancement policies, that sometimes aren't horizontal in the company (i.e. don't apply to all communication media). It's so much more productive to grab the cell-phone at work and call that friend that you could eventually IM a few times during day. People abusing are everywhere and won't be a problem solved by a firewall rule.
If you were talking about possible bugs and exploits in the messaging software or if you were warning about a bug that would affect the millions of PC's with Instant Messagers installed, I could admit the dangerous designation. But what you repeatedly refer as dangerous has nothing to do with computer security, you're talking of socially dangerous, or economically dangerous.
Saying that only pre-teens need instant messaging is just like saying that Internet will only serve for computer-geek in 1992 ou 1993. It shows lack of perpective, only admissible in someone outside the IT industry, and doomed to always be one-step behind."

Jeffrey Zeldman was the keynote speaker at Web Design World 2003. Now he shares his lecture notes on designing with web standards. He also delivered another presentation on Section 508 and design. Here they are, for those of us who couldn't make it.

Tableless

Tableless is an excellent resource (in Portuguese), showing that it is possible to create web sites without the presentational use of tables, and achieve accessibility and compliance with W3C recommendations. Also, you can find articles relating to web standards. On the latest one, Diego Alberto Eis tells about separation of content and presentation, focusing the ease of maintenance of a web site.

Tableless

O site Tableless é um óptimo recurso, onde se mostra na prática que é possível criar um site sem recorrer a tabelas, acessível e compatível com as especificações do W3C. Para além disso, publica regularmente artigos sobre standards web. No mais recente, Diego Alberto Eis fala-nos sobre a separação entre informação e formatação, abordando em particular a Facilidade de Manutenção.

Sad, sad, sad

A Country in FlamesPortugal is on fire. All over the country fires spread. Some because of the extreme heat, some because of criminal hands. I can't even begin to imagine an apropriate punishement for such creatures.

If you look at the map, the red dots inticate fire spreading. Only 3 out of 18 regions were free from the fires yesterday.

People have died. Animals have died. People have to run from the flames, leaving house and belongings behind. It's all too bad.

[PT] Triste, triste, triste

Portugal está a arder. Por todo o país, espalham-se fogos. Alguns devido ao calor extremo, alguns devido a mãos criminosas. Não consigo sequer começar a imaginar qual seria uma pena adequada para tais criaturas.

Olhando para o mapa, os pontos vermelhos indicam fogos a decorrer. Apenas 3 das 18 regiões portuguesas não foram atingidas.

Pessoas morreram. Animais morreram. Pessoas têm de fugir das chamas, deixando para trás a casa e os seus pertences. É tudo muito mau.
